Finding prompt care for a broken arm, painful joint or other conditions of the bones, joints and muscles has just gotten easier for local residents. Community Bone & Joint, a new orthopedic surgery practice, opened its doors in Watervliet in early 2009. The specialized practice offers full-time service for orthopedic consultations, diagnosis, treatment and emergency care.
Board certified orthopedic surgeon, Robert Schaefer, MD, is one of three providers with the new practice. He has 15 years of experience in providing orthopedic care to patients.
Robert Schaefer, MD
Dr. Schaefer earned his medical degree at Wright State University and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Kansas. Following residency, he fulfilled a sports medicine fellowship at Cincinnati Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Center in Ohio. Dr. Schaefer is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and has more than 14 years of orthopedic care experience. He serves as medical director of the Community Hospital Center for Joint Replacement, and specializes in knee and hip replacement surgery, arthroscopy and sports medicine care.

Kurt Piatkowski, DO Dr. Piatkowski is a graduate of University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri. His five-year residency in orthopedic surgery was completed at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Piatkowski is board certified in orthopedic surgery, and has a special interest in arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder, nerve entrapment, syndromes of the upper extremities and trauma.
Michael Maskill, DPM Dr. Maskill is a graduate of Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at the Chicago Medical School. He completed his foot and ankle surgical residency at Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Maskill is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and has a special interest in foot & ankle problems resulting from diabetes, arthritis, trauma and sport injuries.
Tracy Smith, PA-C, ATC
Ms. Smith completed a Master's Degree in the Physician Assistant Program at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. In addition to her qualifications as a physicians assistant, she is a certified athletic trainer. Mrs. Smith is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and National Athletic Trainer's Association.
Community Bone & Joint is located in the Specialty Clinic on the campus of Community Hospital. Office hours are by appointment and a referral from another physician is not necessary.
